London haul

So I had a day in London on the 27 Th to celebrate my besties birthday.
My day started with very early train in the rain on a flying visit to my favourite fabric and trim suppliers in East London. Plenty was bought even though the weather was awful with wind and very heavy rain. These guys really are so sweet they don't forget me even though I might only see them once every two months now, especially the guy who sells the trims he always gives me a discount and shows me all the colours I like! What a gem he is!

After all this wonderful shopping I then met my bestie and her gorgeous mum for shopping in central London. It started in Liberty's of London haberdashery where I got the cute blue bird clothes patch for on my 1983 green army coat. Oh that is a hard place to leave as a sewer let me tell you. All those wonderfully iconic printed pattern cottons. Ah the sweet pain it was to leave there. We then headed out to a long girlie dim sum lunch and then to my other favourite haberdashery, John Lewis on Oxford Street. Then it was time for afternoon tea and cake before an evening of celebration drinks and dinner in a North London public house. Before catching a late train back to Essex in the rain.
Such a magical day full of laughter, love, a feast of great food, shopping and rain!

Take care

Wooden tray project

So on Tuesday I went out searching for old wooden things. By things I mean trays, drawers, crates, thimble displays, shadow boxes etc. My aim was to find something to repaint and some things to list for sale as they were, old and worn and lovely. My only criteria when hunting is material and today was woods turn. It was very unsuccessful as the place I really wanted to go to was out of bounds as I couldn't get any one to drive me there. So I went around the charity shops, (brocantes, op shops, thrift stores) looking at sewing supplies etc, sometimes I find great buttons or ribbons to wrap parcels in being sold for for pennies. It was in one such shop I found this marvellous but dirty serving tray!
before pic, dirty and greasy tray
It was a reasonable price as it is fairly modern. It is made from rubber wood and I thought I could sand it back to erase the grime and re paint it in the lovely distressed country cottage style I adore. So bought it and set about sanding it back that very day.
sanded back and clean!
and the final paint cover was done today. I feel it still needs a certain something on it though. Maybe some free hand drawing before I varnish it. maybe it just needs a pretty crochet tray liner. I shall leave it an hour or two and see how I feel.

just paint

So I have finally decided on free hand drawing on some pale grey features in the corners before putting on a satin varnish to protect the paint work. What do you think?
